The AHEC of a Summer program in Vermilion Parish offered an enriching and immersive
experience for high school students interested in healthcare careers. Open to high school
students with a minimum 2.0 GPA, the program welcomed high school students from throughout
the parish to explore a wide range of medical professions through hands-on learning.
Over the course of fifteen days in June, students volunteered at local hospitals where they
rotated through various departments, observing and job shadowing healthcare professionals.
This real-world exposure allowed them to gain firsthand insight into the day-to-day
responsibilities of medical careers, from nursing and radiology to emergency medicine and
more.
Under the guidance of Career Academy teacher Brandon Billeaud, students also engaged in
interactive workshops, learning about patient care and health issues. Field trips and group
activities further enriched their understanding of the healthcare field.
The program is a state-accredited elective course, and students earned 1/2 unit of high school
elective credit upon successful completion. AHEC of a Summer not only helped students build
practical skills and knowledge, but also inspired many to consider future careers in healthcare.
